Wesclin CUSD #3 Building Referendum

Reasons Why Wesclin Needs a High School Facility

  • The current high school facility lacks adequate classroom space to expand needed high school courses as well as plan for and provide added curriculum opportunities to enhance the educational experience of students attending Wesclin High School.
  • A new school would allow the current high school facility to be used for grades 4-8, providing an improved learning environment for students with access to a library, more technology, improved physical education facilities, and consistency on programming for grades 4-6.
  • Elementary schools are at capacity with no room to add any additional classrooms.
  • Of the current 14 classrooms in the junior high, two (2) classrooms are used exclusively by the high school and one (1) other additional junior high classroom is used for part of the day.  Class periods 2, 4, 5 and 6 have no available classroom space for high school students.
  • In the shared cafeteria/auditorium space, classes are held simultaneously on the stage while lunch periods are in session.  The stage is also used throughout the year for various productions, which makes it difficult to hold classes while simultaneously housing storage space for dramatic performances and other events.  Classes held here must work around sets, costumes, and equipment.
  • Currently, three (3) classes are conducted in the library limiting the use of the library for other students during their study hall time.
  • The Wesclin School District currently leases two (2) facilities (St. George School in New Baden and St. Mary's School in Trenton).  The construction of a new high school facility would provide the district its own buildings, providing a much better educational environment and opportunities for not only high school students, but many other students that currently attend St. George (New Baden) and St. Mary's Schools (Trenton).
  • Because of some of the federal requirements of special education, the Wesclin School District does not meet the legal requirements, partially due to lack of classroom space.
  • The library currently doubles as a computer lab due to lack of adequate space.
  • A lack of space exists for necessary educational meetings as administration, faculty and staff need to meet with students, families, teachers and other individuals.
  • The high school has no room to expand the current curriculum nor does it have room to add sections of current courses to break up large class sizes.
  • New high school English, Math, and Special Education requirements may require additional course and classrooms.  Lack of classroom space will mean not being in compliance with state law.
  • Some current classrooms provide inadequate space to house large classes sizes.
  • Band and chorus concerts are held in the gym, which interferes with physical education and athletics for several days.
  • Inadequate outdoor athletic facilities require home events to take place off campus.
  • Lack of private meeting rooms for special education student services, parent conferences, and employee meetings exist in all district buildings.
